Ecuadorian authorities reported on Sunday that a landslide in Ecuador resulted in at least six deaths and nineteen injuries. The landslide occurred in the central city of Baños, during heavy rains impacting parts of Central and South America.
According to the report from Ecuador's Secretariat of Risk Management, the landslide, of significant scale, took place in the center of Baños. Earlier that day, the agency had reported 30 people missing, but by the afternoon, it confirmed those people had been found.
Ecuador's Minister of Public Works, Roberto Lucques, stated that the heavy rains also affected the operations of three hydroelectric power plants.
Lucques wrote on the social media platform X, "My sympathies go out to all the affected families."
On Sunday, as heavy rains brought by a low-pressure system hit parts of Central and South America, countries issued warnings alerting to increased risks of landslides, rockfalls, and flooding.
In El Salvador, the civil protection agency issued a nationwide red alert for heavy rains, while in neighboring Guatemala, airlines adjusted flights, according to the Guatemalan Ministry of Communications.
