After previously posting a bail amounting to as much as 175 million US dollars, Changpeng Zhao was temporarily spared from imprisonment to await trial. However, Zhao's party did not wish to stay in the United States, repeatedly requesting to return to the United Arab Emirates or Canada, but was denied, requiring him to stay in the United States until the trial concluded.
Changpeng Zhao spent a significant portion of his childhood living in Canada, therefore, the U.S. government was concerned that once he reached the US-Canada border, he might attempt to flee to Canada. As a Canadian citizen, Zhao had applied multiple times to return to Canada but was denied each time.
Zhao Changpeng had no choice but to comply with the demands of the U.S. court, but he continued to argue that this suite of restrictive measures was unnecessary, as his whereabouts have not been an issue so far. To this, the U.S. court's response was, "What has not been an issue so far may become one in the future."
